North light is the light painters ask for: flat, even, no shadows worth mentioning. The owner wanted color and I talked him out of it, mostly. The brick was painted white, the timber was left alone, and a long pale oak island runs the length of the windows so that the one thing that changes all day is the loft itself.
The bathroom, which has no window, got the color: dark green glazed tile that the steel-framed door lets a little north light into.
