Foursquares are honest houses: four rooms down, four rooms up, light from every side at some point in the day. This one's living room faces west, so we gave it a dark green velvet sofa that goes almost black at noon and glows at six, and painted the coffered dining room ceiling a soft terracotta for the same hour.
The study, which faces nowhere in particular, was painted deep plum and given a lamp. Some rooms are for the evening whatever the compass says.
